The Best Airlines in the World: Readers' Choice Awards 2014

The results are in: Singapore, Emirates, and Virgin America airlines as favorite airlines in the world this year. If there’s one theme that stands out in the Readers' Choice Survey, it’s that flat beds and fancy video systems may be nice, but it’s in the decidedly low-tech realm of customer service that make these perennial winners.
And for obvious reasons Singapore Airlines tops the list followed by Emirates and Virgin America

1. Singapore Airlines

Readers' rating: 85.672
"This airline definitely treats you like a part of its family."
"Great service, great food, and the flight crew actually smiled!!!"
"The flight attendants on Singapore Air are the most courteous of any airline."

Flight attendants who greet passengers by name and fete honeymooners with champagne may sound like a throwback to the early jet age, but on Singapore Air, they’re part of the service mantra that’s drilled into the crew from the first day of a famously rigorous training program. (And yes, the distaff side still goes by the “Singapore Girl” moniker.) SQ also gets high marks for comfortable seating and continuous upgrades to its premium product, such as the Singapore Suites, a pair of fully flat recliners that can be transformed into a double bed, offered exclusively on its double-decker A380 planes. The carrier has bucked industry trends by investing heavily in its in-flight kitchens, with a “book the cook” program whereby premium fliers can pre-order meals designed by top chefs. Even in the back of the plane, fliers appreciate touches like dim sum breakfasts and the state-of-the-art Kris World seatback entertainment system. As one reader put it: "This is how an airline should be run."

2. Emirates

Readers' rating: 85.672
"They truly care about their customers and always try to exceed expectations."
"Amazing service and such a beautiful plane; staff are extremely polite and well educated."
Emirates’ over-the-top amenities have gained it a loyal following among free-spending fliers: Where else could you take an in-flight shower or belly up to the bar than on the top deck of one of the carrier’s signature A380s? But readers also liked the friendly and courteous staff, a seatback entertainment system with 1,800 channels of entertainment, along with the “excellent” food, fine wines, and “champagne galore.” While the Dubai-based airline has luxurious accommodations in the pointy end of the planes private suites in first class, compartments with mini-bars in business—it also gets a nod for having the “world’s best” airport lounges, complete with showers and quiet rooms at its hubs in Dubai and major destinations like New York, and London. And it gets praise for being family friendly—something you don’t hear too often in the airline business these days. “One of the best airlines to fly aboard if you have kids with you” was one typical comment.

3. Virgin America

Readers' rating: 81.250
"Virgin is my favorite airline to fly on. You feel like you're going to a club when you step on the plane. It's modern, attentive, and their social media is amazing."
As the U.S. outpost of Richard Branson’s vast Virgin empire, Virgin America had a lot of expectations to live up to, and judging from the survey results, the San Francisco line continues to deliver; our readers named it the top U.S. airline for the seventh year in a row. One reason: a real first-class product, not just the watered-down versions on other domestic airlines, and the fact that it’s not impossible to score an upgrade. Fliers also like the sophisticated but user-friendly interactive system that offers features such as touch-screen meal orders and seat-to-seat messaging, as well as a slew of video selections with lots of options for children. The line’s hip and irreverent style gets high marks, too, with a number of readers mentioning its rap safety video. As one reader remarked: “Virgin America has a high coolness factor.”

10 Best Honeymoon Destinations in the World

Are you planning an upcoming wedding? Have you decided on a destination to runaway to after you are officially hitched? Check out the following ten best honeymoon destinations in the world to see if one matches your idea of the perfect romantic rendezvous.

1. Maldives

Maldive Islands

The Maldive Islands are a top honeymoon destination if you like sand in your toes and sun in your face. Trendy yet tranquil, the ‘Maldives’ (as they are commonly known) offer the perfect getaway for couples on the hunt for a little alone time. If azure ocean water and purple-hued sunsets are to your liking, you might want to consider heading to the Indian Ocean for your post-wedding getaway.

2. Bali

Bali is popular with wedded couples looking for a combination of culture and quiet time. Destinations like Bukit, Ubud, and Nusa Dua are well-known options to consider. Be sure to prepare your tummy ahead of time for the Asian cuisine you’ll experience in Bali. You don’t want to spend your honeymoon hunting for the closest washroom.

3. St. Lucia

St. Lucia

St. Lucia is another trendy destination for honeymoon couples. Think lush vegetation, sky-blue seas, and tropical drinks under towering palm trees and you have a daydream worth turning into a reality. Tour the countryside or lounge on the beach when you visit St. Lucia. Don’t be surprised if you don’t want to return to real life following your honeymoon.

4. Canada’s Lake Louise

Canada's Lake Louise

Canada’s Lake Louise is a spectacular destination for couples. Perfect for a winter honeymoon, Lake Louise is even more stunning in the summer. You won’t believe your eyes when you spot the iridescent green lake laid out before you. Nestled in amongst the towering Canadian Rocky Mountains, this is one destination that truly will etch its memory on your soul.

5. Tofino on Vancouver Island

While Canada isn’t the country that normally comes to mind when you think romantic destinations, Tofino on Vancouver Island just might change your mind. Miles of sunset-kissed beaches await you at the end of the West Coast trail. If you have the courage to travel across rugged mountain terrain in winter, Tofino is an excellent honeymoon destination during storm season.

6. Greece

Greece

Greece can usually be found on most top ten honeymoon lists. When you have options like Santorini, Athens, and Delphi, it is no wonder couples in love have been trekking to Greece en masse. Can you say Opa?

7. Belize

Belize

No honeymoon hot-spot list is complete without Belize. Tropical, tantalizing, and tempestuous are just three descriptions that will spring to mind once you have visited Belize. Scuba diving, rainforest romps, and jaguar-spotting are just some of the activities you can consider if you ever make it out of your romance-riddled room.

8. Florence, Italian

Florence Italian

If your preference is for ancient buildings and arresting architecture, Italy’s fabulous Florence might be worth considering for your honeymoon destination. Red roofs as far as you can see, and blue/green mountains as a backdrop to your travels. Florence is perfect for couples who like to explore hidden treasures by foot and pop into cafes to discover tempting Italian cuisine.

9. Tahiti

Tahiti

Tahiti has been a popular honeymoon destination for decades. Thatched roofs, palm trees, and sweet-scented breezes are just some of the treats in store when you venture to French Polynesia for your post-nuptial getaway. There’s a good reason locations like Bora Bora have been home to Hollywood movie productions. Mesmerizing is an excellent word to describe the time you’ll enjoy in Tahiti.

10. Kenya

While Kenya isn’t normally the first destination that springs to mind when you think of honeymoon hot-spots, locations like Loisaba will change your mind. Peacock patrols, zebra-spotting, and elephant gazing are just some of the safari options that await you in Kenya. Think Robert Redford in Out of Africa, and you’ll understand just how romantic Kenya can be.

Now that you’re completely confused when it comes to tempting travel destinations, where do you think you will decide to spend your honeymoon? Safaris, snorkeling, or surfing; what will you decide?
